The Heard County Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce Heard County High School Senior, Susan Avery as the Heard County STAR Student. Susan is the daughter of Charlotte Avery and Jimmy Jennings. Susan has chosen Heard County Middle School Educator, Ginger Cornelius as her STAR teacher. Ms. Cornelius taught Susan 8th grade mathematics. Ms. Cornelius has been an educator in Heard County for 16 years. Ms. Cornelius and her husband Keith have two sons, Jordan and Drew.
Susan and Ms. Cornelius will both be honored at the Chamber Spring Luncheon on March 16, 2010.
The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program was created to focus public attention of Georgia's outstanding students and the teachers who have influenced their academic development. Each year a top academic senior in each participating Georgia high school is named the STAR student for that high school. The student must have the highest score on the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class. Each student is asked to name his/her STAR teacher. Since Heard High School has only one high school, the school winner is also the system winner. System winners go on to district recognition and district winners compete for State STAR Student.
The Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) coordinates the statewide STAR program in association with the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and Georgia Department of Education. The Heard County Chamber of Commerce has been the sponsor of this local recognition event for the STAR program's existence.
